I’ve got a new podcast up where I tell you why I think you should pay to volunteer.
Yup – I said. And I’m serious.
Paying to do short-term volunteer work in an international setting is (to me) essential to non-profit sustainability.

We’ve used this method for many years to fund outreach to the homeless in Toronto with thousands of volunteers. The majority are students, but many are adult teams, who come for a short-term missions, 1 to 2 weeks. They must raise funds to pay for their experience – includes lodging, meals, and group supervision during hands on outreach and service to people experiencing homelessness. They are the hands and feet and help at numerous non-profit agencies in the inner city. These agencies would by no means have the capacity to mobilize and host the number of volunteers involved. The same model is also used in major cities throughout North America, such as Boston, Philidelphia, Houston, and many more. I have also “paid” to travel to do service with poor communities in Grenada in the Caribbean. Thanks for sharing your views in the podcast.
Hi there Claire, I was wondering if you had taken down this podcast. I went to the link and tried to listen but wasn’t able to find this talk. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks! And keep up the good work!
