I’ve now finished recording ten videos sharing my favorite (make that least favorite) social media pet peeves. The tenth video, below, shares the topic I found myself most annoyed by: people who talk about themselves too much on social media.
It’s a common trap to fall into — wanting to promote your own work — but it’s one of the least appealing social media behaviors I know.
(Hence the reason I can’t stop talking about it.)
Make sure to brush up on video one and video two before you view video three, below:
You’re not still talking about yourself are you?
Well stated. Thank you Claire.
I guess I should remove those posts from Buffer app with my friends quoting about how amazing I am.
Hmmm… I haven’t decided if I’m going to agree with you on this one or not. I know your intention and I don’t disagree with that, but based on how social media works overall, I’m not quite sure I agree with it as a strategy.
My reason is thus. If you have more than 10 people following you and they’re following more than 10 people, odds are great that very few people will see anything you put out. Whereas I wouldn’t advocate running something every 30 minutes, and I don’t do what I’m about to suggest either, running something 4 times a day isn’t bad strategy for most people trying to gain an audience. The same goes for Facebook where, once again, I don’t do it, but with Edgerank running something more than once gives you the opportunity to reach more people.
Why don’t I do it? I don’t know. I sometimes post my articles a second time late at night on Twitter, but only once ever on Facebook. But I don’t get upset at those folks who do it because I understand their reasoning.
